In Loving Memory

Erik Swanson

March 12, 1975 – January 1, 2026

There was a particular kind of person who could make an entire room laugh without trying, who could find the absurd in the ordinary and hand it back to you wrapped in a smirk — that was Erik Swanson. Born in Normal, Illinois, Erik lived a life that was anything but, building something meaningful and distinctly his own at every turn.

Erik made his way through Dartmouth College, graduating with the class of 1998, and went on to build an impressive career that spoke to his drive and his mind. He spent two decades at Commerce Bank, earning the trust and respect that come only through genuine dedication, and later channeled that same entrepreneurial spirit into owning Lamcraft, a funeral supply company. He was a member of the CFA Institute, a credential that reflected the rigor and discipline he brought to everything he pursued professionally.

But the truest measure of Erik was found outside the office. He was up before the sun most mornings, running alongside his wife Tara — not because he had to, but because those quiet miles together mattered to him. He lifted weights with the same quiet determination that defined his work ethic. He was, at his core, a hard worker who believed in showing up.

And yet, what people will remember most is the wit. Erik had a gift for cutting through pretension with a single well-timed line. He saw the world clearly, and he wasn't afraid to say so — with humor, with warmth, and with a raised eyebrow that said everything. His own philosophy, delivered in his signature style: "It's all BS." Somehow, coming from Erik, it was both hilarious and oddly comforting.

He was a devoted member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish and a beloved presence in the Mission Hills community he called home. He is survived by his wife and running partner, Tara, and their three children, Cole, Amelia, and Lottie, who will carry his humor, his creativity, and his laugh with them always. He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Swanson.

Erik leaves behind people who loved him deeply, and a room that will never quite be as funny without him in it.

But is he really gone, or is he running from the debt

— Terry

I met Erik at Cyberdyne Systems after I graduated from MIT. He was quite a programmer. He will be missed!

— Sarah Connor

Erik was a good man. He was, however, always afraid of flying. I pity that fool.

— B.A. Baracus

Erik was a great friend. But he owed me $10,000. Who can I call about this?

— Tom Mitchell
